PLOT: A young woman ( Julia Garner) works as an assistant to a predatory New York-based movie mogul. REVIEW: In essence, THE ASSISTANT is the first (but likely not the last) movie about Harvey Weinstein. Due for a theatrical release next month through Bleecker Street, its well-timed considering that his trial is currently underway, with damming testimony each and every day giving us deeper insight into the culture of abuse that was seemingly a day-to-day thing at Miramax and The Weinstein Company. One of the big questions has been whether or not the people who worked for Weinstein knew, and how complicit they were in his crimes. Kitty Greens THE ASSISTANT gives voice to the many underlings Weinstein burned through over the years, many of whom were shackled by NDAs or the threat of career ruin were they to speak up. THE ASSISTANT takes you inside the corporate culture in a minimalist way, taking place over one seemingly endless day in the New York office of what one can assume is The Weinstein Company as Kelly Garners Jane spends a day working for her tyrannical, unseen boss. We track her as she arrives in the middle of the night on a Monday morning to do things both routine (printing up the weekend box office, making coffee) and distinctly not routine (cleaning fluids off the “casting couch”, retrieving lost jewelry left in his office) while also fielding calls from her bosss frazzled wife. We never see the man who would be Weinstein, although we hear his voice on the phone as he berates Jane in random fits of pique (lets not forget - in addition to being a sex abuser he was also a world-class bully. Anyone looking for a sense of empowerment or a happy ending should look elsewhere. Thats not this movie. Rather, its an honest look into a permissive culture where going with the flow was easier than blowing the whistle, with Janes trip to a slimy HR guru ( Matthew Macfayden) having disastrous results. Youre not asked to sympathize with Jane or even understand her - rather it just presents what went on in a matter of fact way. Jane wants to get ahead but knows theres a cost, with her in effect serving as his de facto pimp when his latest conquest, a young woman straight off the bus from Idaho, shows up for a new job at the office. Its a strong showcase for Julia Garner, whos made big waves in recent years thanks to her arcs on “The Americans” and “Ozark”. Shes meant to play the film in a cold, aloof way as she cant act out emotionally lest she show her bosses what she thinks of them. She maintains our sympathy as shes personable, even if despite her conscience shes just another enabler. This ambiguity is going to make THE ASSISTANT a tough sit for many, as its not a clear-cut narrative at all. In eighty-seven minutes, we follow Jane on a relatively mundane day, with us getting the sense that its no better or worse than a usual Monday and that the next day shell be asked to do things that are just as bad. Is she responsible? Id wager shes not, as the movie shows shes merely a cog in a much larger machine, with Macfayden even telling her at one point that hes got a stack of four hundred CVs all eager to take the entry-level job she has. If she doesnt do it, someone else will. Shes still an enabler, but the film doesnt ask you to condemn her for that. This ambiguity will likely keep THE ASSISTANT from crossing over in a major way, although its certainly a fascinating companion piece to the trial thats happening now and an important time capsule in some ways.

(Even a little girl treats her with a sort of royal disdain. This, Green makes constantly, crushingly clear, is what it feels like to be the least important person in the room. With so little exposition, theres not much chance for her protagonist to become a whole person in the audiences eyes, but Garner (a recent Emmy winner for her turn on Ozark) puts everything into Janes watchful gaze: fear, anxiety, incredulity, exhaustion; the rare lightning-bolt flash of rebellion. And she finds the telling details in her smallest interactions, whether its a painfully awkward town car ride with one of her bosss pillow-lipped “discoveries, ” or a late-night phone call to her sweet, oblivious father. The presence of Garner and Succession s Matthew McFayden (as an insidiously unhelpful HR rep) might lead casual viewers of the movies trailer to think that The Assistant will follow a more conventionally satisfying narrative path than it does. By almost any metric, this movie is not entertainment; its slow, painful going — even the continued inference of sexual misconduct, and the demi-climax that Janes attempt at confronting it leads to, register at a sort of muffled hum. Instead of melodrama, the movie finds its traction in parsing out micro-aggressions and mood: a sort of devastating slow-drip portrait of the power structures that allowed a man like Weinstein to happen — and keep more like him in place, untouched by any justice a hashtag can reach. Jane, on the other hand, is still learning the ropes at the New York film company at which The Assistant is set. She occupies the lowest rung on the ladder, which is why she has to arrive first, in the pre-dawn darkness, to open up the office. Its also why she puts on gloves and cleans up whatever new stains have been deposited on the couch in the chairmans office. The expression on her face when she does this is the same as the one thats there when she washes the dishes left in the kitchen by co-workers who dont even seem to see her. Its the tight, pallid look of someone trying to get through things without thinking too hard about what shes doing. That the man Jane is working under in The Assistant is a stand-in for Harvey Weinstein is understood. Hes never named and he never appears onscreen, an approach that echoes how filmmaker and former Weinstein assistant Leslye Headland wrote about her old workplace in her 2008 play Assistance. The Assistant shares an understanding that the man himself is less psychologically interesting than the people around him, and how theyve learned to tolerate, accommodate, rationalize away, or internalize his behavior. What makes the film such a spare but searingly insightful treatment of the issues at the core of Me Too is the way it refuses to separate its unseen executives sexual predation from the larger structures that enable it. The environment revolves around certain unspoken but understood rules of abuse — namely, that abuse is something that you have to put up with until youre powerful enough to be amused by or dismissive of it when its directed at others. And here its women, especially women that the chairman finds desirable, who receive a disproportionate amount of it. The Assistant is the first scripted feature from writer-director Kitty Green. For her last film, the 2017 documentary Casting JonBenet, Green put out a call to Colorado-based actors to try out for the major roles in the unsolved 1996 child murder, and, while they were there, to offer up their own theories and recollections. It was an excavation of our true-crime obsession that was illuminating, chilly, and occasionally cruel in its pitiless use of its eager-to-please interviewees. That same sense of distance is there in The Assistant, but it serves the new film far better. The Assistant observes its main character, a recent college grad who has theoretically landed her dream job, with a detached interest, taking in her struggles and her complicity while offering her neither sympathy nor castigation. The camera pays closer attention to Jane than the people in her professional life, most of whom treat her as ranking somewhere above office furniture but not quite at the level of actual human. In one sequence, she shares an elevator with Patrick Wilson, apparently playing himself, and the way they awkwardly attempt to exit at the same time suggests he hadnt even realized shed been standing next to him. The Assistant takes place over the course of a grueling but typical day for Jane — an airless trudge through phone calls and photocopies that deviates from the norm only when she decides to stop by human resources to file a complaint. She does this not on her own behalf, but because of the new assistant the chairman has decided to add to the pool — a painfully young and pretty former waitress from Idaho (Kristine Froseth) that he met at a conference and offered a job to. Its hard to tell whether Jane is moved to action because she sees herself in the new girl, whom she nevertheless escorts to her boss hotel of choice. It seems just as possible that she acts because she doesnt see any of herself in the new girl; the hiring lays bare how arbitrary their employment is. Its not work or experience that matters, its the demanded displays of loyalty and subservience — and in that light, fielding calls from your boss angry wife and (maybe) trading sexual favors with him are all regarded as the same thing. The scene in HR that follows, and that involves Matthew Macfadyen, with a smile full of razors, makes the dilemma of Janes position apparent. He suggests shes jealous, that shes overreacting, that shes denying the agency of grown women, and thats she throwing away a prime opportunity for the sake of a whim. And once hes worn her down to a nub, he assures her, “I dont think you have anything to worry about. Youre not his type. ” Theres nothing about Jane, whom Garner plays with a rabbity air of uncertainty, that suggests shell ever speak up again. Shes a girl from a nice home who went to a good school, and shes doing what shes been told she ought to in order to rise through the ranks. When her boss gives her the verbal equivalent of a pat on the head after one of his outbursts — “Im tough on you because Im gonna make you great” — its easy to imagine Jane as one of the few older women executives in the office, who roll their eyes at everything she struggles to bear witness to, having long ago accepted that its all part of the business. You feel his presence in the next room. His aides, of which you are one, are ever on alert to satisfy his ever-changing demands. You want to escape his wrath. But you never see him. Hes the elephant in the building, receiving visitors, including attractive young women. We all know who he is and are certain of what hes up to. But hes the king and youre an instantly replaceable flunky. Such is the premise of The Assistant, a novel, low-key, insider-ish glance at what it was like, not too long ago, to work for a certain outsize Hollywood mogul whose headquarters were a continent away in downtown New York City. He looms over all but no one dares speak his name. On the basis of her earlier documentaries, which include Ukraine Is Not a Brothel and Casting JonBenet two years ago, Australian writer-director Kitty Green clearly seems drawn to controversial material rooted in aspects of sexual exploitation. In her modestly scaled dramatic feature debut, she has taken a restrained approach to the inflammatory, keeping the temperature at a low simmer and insinuating rather than showing whats going on in the bosss office and in the luxury hotels he books for certain select female candidates for his attention. As if writing for a concentrated, minimalistic theater piece, Green basically presents a day in the life of an assistant to the unseen mogul. Jane (Julia Garner) is the first to arrive at the modestly sized Soho office space; its still dark outside, and she goes about the Jeanne Dielman-like daily chores of preparing the coffee, lining up the water bottles just so and, tellingly, scrubbing the couch, the first hint that something untoward might have gone on the day before in the office. You get the feeling she has made an effort to downplay her looks, pulling her hair back primly and wearing a modest outfit. Shes also extremely reserved with her largely male office colleagues, who, for their part, disregard her, either out of a sense of superiority or the feeling that she could be there one day and gone the next, or probably both. In all events, Jane, who has been on the job for just over a month, tries to keep her head down to avoid unwanted attention. Mostly, the film is devoted to detailing what one might call the ever-urgent monotony of life in the office; the boss is flying to L. A. at 11:00 tonight out of Teterboro, and there will be two additional passengers; confirm the reservation at the Peninsula; “The Wife” is calling; a beautiful blonde has just arrived for a meeting. Later in the day, Jane finds a way to return a gold bracelet to an Asian woman who was recently in the bosss office, and the quiet, unspoken indignities only accelerate from there; the young male assistants who constitute the vast majority of the office staff are short with and condescending toward Jane, whom they perhaps assume wont be there for too long, and everyone seems to be on tenterhooks, also no doubt for good reason. Green is very good at sustaining the sense of low-boil fear and tension that prevails among the whole staff, as well as pinpointing the pressure everyone feels to always deliver and not to attract attention by screwing up. Also very clear is how the few women in the office, and specifically Jane, hope to survive by not drawing the slightest adverse attention. However, its to the films ultimate detriment that Jane remains such a quiet, withdrawn, deliberately attention-avoiding figure. So determined to remain essentially invisible is she that she eventually seems out of place in such a dynamic, if combustible, environment. Nothing about her seems exceptional, to the point that one wonders why she chose to work in this rarefied realm. Jane just wants to keep her head down and escape unwanted scrutiny. As a result, the central character never develops in an interesting way. Well before the wrap-up of this brief tale, her cultivated recessiveness becomes tiresome and, in these particular circumstances, a bit dull. Up to this point, however, the film maintains an intriguing and well-managed tension, and its exacting evocation of a very particular time and place in very recent film industry history will stir the interest of industry members and students of it. A more general public, however, will likely find Greens approach dry and too restrained. Therefore, given the fireworks that have replaced the look-the-other-way attitude that prevailed for so long on the topic of this piece, The Assistant stands as an insightful, if after-the-fact look at long-tolerated behavior. It's a reminder of how things were until very, very recently.
